Dear Friends,

During the unrest at the beginning of the year, around 300,000 people were burned off of their farms in Kenya. These displaced persons went to live with relatives or in sprawling refugee camps. In our area of Kitale, where the Centre is located, there were up to 40,000 displaced persons. Fortunately, in the last two months, most of these people returned home.

The planting season begins in April, at the start of the rainy season. Most of the displaced returned to their farms after the start of planting. There is considerable concern now about food shortages in Kenya. The experts are estimating a shortfall of 30% during the harvest in November.

At St. John Bosco we have four acres under cultivation with maize. We were able to plant at the proper time in April. So we should harvest enough corn this year to feed the 60 children in residence at St. John Bosco throughout 2009. We are concerned though about the availability and price of beans and rice, which we must purchase for the children in the markets.

Again, we wish to express our gratitude to our supporters who are seeing us through these challenging times in Kenya.

Yours in Christ - Russ Brine, Project Manager
